Shortly before his death in 2003, Mr. Fred McFeeley Rogers met with the President to discuss the future of his award-winning television program, Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. President Bush has long been a fan of Mr. Rogers, and invited Mr. Rogers to come and receive the Medal of Freedom and to solidify plans to make sure that “no child is left out” of such quality programming in the future.
Accordingly, after George W. Bush’s retirement from President of the United States, he will take over as host for Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, changing the name to Mr. Bush’s Neighborhood. Here, American children can continue to play with Mr. Bush in the land of make-believe and learn what it means to be good neighbors, friends and Americans. “Young people need to understand the dangers we face,” said the President. “There is no better way to do this than by putting these ideas in the minds of impressionable youths through regularly scheduled television programs.” Speaking in front of a crowd at the reception, Bush added, “You see, in my line of work, you have to keep repeating yourself, to sort of catapult the propaganda. We want Americans to be afraid of terrorists, so every day in Mr. Bush’s neighborhood we’ll be confronting the issues of islamofascism and extremism.”
Mr. Bush plans to continue to wear the traditional cardigan sweater and sneakers, although there has been no substantiation to the rumors that Dick Cheney will play the role of Mr. McFeeley, the delivery man.
We attempted to reach Vice-President Cheney for comment, to which he snarled, “I’ve got enough work to do finishing up my presidency, leave me alone!”
